Mossy Back Finishes 2nd in Big Fish Category
By James of Team Mossy Back
Team Mossy Back fished the 2004 National Catfish
Tournament held on Santee Cooper Reservoir at Randolph’s Landing. The field
consisted of 89 boats. We also finished 4th in the total weight
division.
We landed a 54.5 pound flathead to finish second in
this year’s tournament. Our 5 fish total weighed in at 147.9 pounds. All
catfish weighed in were flatheads.
We were using live gizzard shad in 30 foot of water.
We found the fish by using our knowledge and our Lowrance to locate the
hawgs where we thought they might be. We fished straight down and waited
for the bend of the pole.
When flathead fishing like this, you want to use a rod
tip that is pretty limber so you can see the slightest bump when the
flathead first engulfs the bait. You want to set the hook immediately and
not give the flathead a chance to take you back in his hole or into a big ol’
stump.
We had a blast at this year’s tournament as always.
Nothing like being around a bunch of seasoned and skilled catfishermen on a
lake like Santee.
First place Big Fish was a 58 pound blue and first
place total weight was 212 pounds weighed in by the same cat anglers.
We look forward to 2005’s National Catfish Tournament
and hope to see some of yall out there.
